Red Ravine

Another very memorable three-day and two-night white water rafting expedition down another South African classic. Spectacular paddling through very scenic rural Zululand. Not as intense as the Legendary Tugela River Canyon, but equally as enjoyable. The average grade on this one is 1-3, but big! This stretch must be paddled at high water and also require being totally self-sufficient for the duration of the trip. Due to being more user friendly it provides us with the option either taking it on with smaller 2-man inflatable rafts or large 6 to 8-man rafts.

Another three-days and two-nights of ultra-classic white water rafting on the Tugela River. This stretch of river must be paddled at high water. There is a very good mixture of easy going grade 2 rapids and some really solid grade 3+ rapids. This section is relatively unknown and not well visited at all. Scenery differs a bit from the Legendary Tugela River Canyon. Almost along the entire way enjoy traditional and very peaceful Zulu homestead living. A significant advantage of this stretch is that is more user friendly. If you feel the Tugela Canyon is too intense this is the perfect replacement. The approach is also expedition style where everything we need is on board. A real highlight is being hosted by local Zulu in the Nhlonga district at the end of day 2. As always, stunning scenery!

DAY 1 – The Ravine to Mashunka

Put-in just below the Bushman’s River inflow. Turn the first corner and bang and you are in the thick of it. This first stretch is such fun paddling. Expect big volumes and awesome surf waves. Don’t be surprised if an 8-man get swallowed. Nearing the end of the day it flattens out a bit and it is a nice and relaxing end to a fun filled day. After passing the Sondays River inflow the overnight stop is in a secluded little gorge not far from Tugela Ferry.

DAY 2 – Mashunka to Nhlonga

The first bit of the day is easy and enjoyable paddling. Nearing Tugala Ferry it calms down all the way to a flatwater flat, but not for too long. The river meanders here through a beautiful, deep gorge like area. Leaving Tugela Ferry behind the anticipation starts to build for one spectacular rapid – Stadium Rapid. Not too long after you have got the Mooi River’s inflow where it is again fun and enjoyable paddling all the way to our local host.

DAY 3 – Nhlonga to Buffalo River inflow

This is a short day out on some very fun stuff. The scenery of this area is very beautiful. After moving through this place you be longing for more special times in this authentic African landscape.
